'That was a tour de force.' 'The best wine event I've ever seen'. Joe is in demand for his authority and as an entertainer. He is a respected voice at food and wine festivals in the UK and USA, on Celebrity Cruises or for his merchant expertise at trade conferences. He is also noted as one of the business's most entertaining speakers. 'Painfully funny' and 'fascinating and memorable' are typical of the comments after one of Joe's wine events.
You may well already have enjoyed one of Joe's wine lists. In a 20 year career, Joe's looked after hotel and restaurant customers from Wick to Brighton. He began looking after pubs stretching from Glasgow to the West Highlands. He rose to manage teams of wine sales people selling to seventeen hundred sites in London. His wine lists have won awards and he's in demand as a consultant to sites across the country.
Is it possible to play golf and drink wine for a living? Joe managed it for several years as a consultant to the US PGA TOUR and Tournament Players Club network. He worked at PGA TOUR events hosting wine dinners. And travelled round the TPC network hosting a programme of tastings, dinners and wine entertainment. It was generally agreed to be the greatest job ever invented.
Joe began his wine career as a university academic. His groundbreaking research into the 'Disneyfication of wine retailing' and 'professional consumers' in wine led to 'Managing Wine and Wine Sales'. This was the first text book to help hospitality students around the world turn a love of wine into profit. Even 20 years later it still appears on reading lists in University departments. Joe still teaches occasionally at hospitality courses in the UK and overseas.
